Last year, Mercedes-Benz dropped a bomb on the world that left us without the Mercedes-AMG SLS GT. The German automobile creator gave us with the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S, which is actually better in most ways, but it just doesn’t have the roar of 583 horses getting violently forced out of 6.2 liters of volume. Now we know what was really going on. Mercedes-Benz and AMG were holding out for the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R. Some engine specifications have recently surfaced and we think Mercedes-Benz missed the SLS GT too.

Mercedes-Benz has not yet released any information regarding when the new GT R will go on sale, but it has been testing similar models for the last year. It has been spotted on the Nurburgring and in the street. They were wearing disguises of course, but it is obvious to anyone familiar to the Mercedes-AMG GT. For a release, 2017 is a possibility, but it is not for certain. One thing we know for certain is that it will at least be easier to get than the 2017 Mercedes-AMG S63 Carbriolet 130 edition!
The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S vs 2015 Mercedes-AMG SLS GT comparison took a lot of scrutiny because of the dramatic decrease in engine size. Even though the performance is unnoticeably the same, it is hard for enthusiasts to get away from the large engine, high power output that they are used to. Because of this, the 6.2L V8 is back. It is the same engine that lived in the SLS GT, but with a few tweaks.
In order to compete in the GT 3 racing setting, the GT R will be limited to the 500-600 horsepower range. The outgoing SLS GT made 583 horsepower, but the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R may not need that much power. It is safe to expect around 550 horsepower. When paired with the new technologies of the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S, the GT R will easily be the best thing to come out of the GT badge. Bookmark our blog for more GT R updates!
