2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Release Date

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Specifications

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R was unveiled last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and we are excited to say that we underestimated the power of the newest addition to the AMG GT family. The new GT R is cleared for takeoff, but legal on the street. Could it the most extreme passenger car to ever assault a public road? Probably, yes.

Engine

Mercedes-Benz has done the world a solid by perfecting biturbo forced induction. Not only in the GT, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG biturbo engines make competition look like children’s toys, especially in terms of torque. The GT R comes with an already proven 4.0L handcrafted AMG biturbo dry-sump hot inside V8. The reason we make sure to include all of that information in the description is because all of these aspects are unique to the industry and important to what makes the AMG GT R such a unicorn.

Horsepower and Torque

At 6,250 RPM, the GT R can make 577 horsepower. This may not seem like when you compare it to something like the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, for example, but if you know how cars work, you know the Hellcat is nothing more than a burnout machine. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Below the 6,000 RPM range, the GT R makes 516 lb-ft of torque.

Transmission

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-Speed automatic transmission has been, is, and will be the best transmission on the market for some time to come. It literally shifts faster than you can blink, even if you are trying, and, if tested, would probably hold it’s own against a nuclear bomb.

Curb Weight and Acceleration

It’s not something you could lift up by yourself, but it has a 1,000 pound advantage over the Challenger Hellcat. We don’t mean to keep picking on the underdog but it’s just too easy.

Price

We are still waiting for Mercedes-Benz to release a price, but this is definitely one of those cars where the price shouldn’t matter. Either you need it or you don’t. Good stuff though, right? If you have any questions about the sports car conceived and born on the Nurburgring, you know where to find us!
