A convertible is like a motorcycle with two extra wheels. Without a permanent roof, there is no need for windows, dome lights, or stress. To make a long story short, convertibles are cool. Maybe even too cool. They are attractive. They put wind in your hair. They make tall people feel at home. They even provide light where the sun don’t shine. There is only one downside to the convertible; not enough electricity. There is only one fully-electric convertible in the United States. Can you guess what it is?
Will Electric Drive Become Its Own Brand?
Don’t be disappointed. The smart fortwo is a great car. Especially if you care about efficiency or mobility, the smart car might even be the best car. Right now, the 2017 smart fortwo Electric Drive Cabriolet is the only fully-electric vehicle in the world. That may come as a surprise but it is the truth. Luxury and economy don’t usually go together, but in this case, they certainly do.
By use of an electric three-phase synchronous motor, the smart fortwo cabrio makes 80 horsepower and 118 lb-ft of torque. Obviously this isn’t that much power, but the smart fortwo cabrio weighs about the same as the late Honda CRX, so it doesn’t really need a lot of power to get you where you’re going and maybe even have a little fun along the way.
With a fully-charged battery, the smart fortwo ED cabrio can travel up to 96 miles. For the size, this is actually very good. Once drained, it will take a little more than two and a half hours to bring it back to full charge.
