Should I check the tread depth of my vehicle?

How to Check the Tread Depth of My Vehicle?

Tread depth helps you maintain the traction and stability of your vehicle and reduces the braking time. Measuring the tread depth of your car should be included in the regular maintenance process for your car. Join us at Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale in Scottsdale, AZ, to learn how to check the tread depth of your vehicle. Continue reading for more information.

Penny Test for Tread Depth Measurement

To check the tread depth of your tires, carry out the penny test. Hold a quarter or a penny in the tread depth gap and check to see if you can see the entire face of the President on the coin. If the face is visible, then it is a clear indication to change your tires. Tire tread depth should be maintained at 12/32-inches and 15/32-inches for heavy vehicles.

The penny test is an accurate indicator of whether you need new tires or not and should be a foolproof way of keeping your tires in check. Other than the penny test you can also check for bulges, blisters, or cracks and change the tires accordingly. It is also advised to change your tires once every six to ten years based on the manufacturing date of the tire which can be found embossed on the tire.
