How To Remove Scratches And Scuffs From Mercedes-Benz

Whether you are driving a new Mercedes-Benz or a 10-year-old used car, finding a scratch or a scuff on your car can ruin your whole day. If it is a big scratch, it is probably best to bring it in for service, but if it is a small scratch that didn’t make it through the clear-coat, you may be able to resolve the issue at home with little to no money. Read on to learn how to remove scratches and scuffs from your Mercedes-Benz car or SUV.

Paint Composition

To understand how to remove scratches and scuffs, you first must understand how paint is applied to your car. There are three main components to exterior automotive paint – primer, base, and clear-coat.

Primer

The first layer of paint applied to a car is primer. Primer helps protect the frame of the car from rust, it helps the paint stick, and it also helps make the color “pop”.

Base Coat

The base coat provides the color that you see in the finished product and is sandwiched in between the primer and the clear coat. It may consist of multiple layers.

Clear-Coat

Last but not least is the clear-coat. It is applied to the exterior of the automobile and serves the purpose of making the car shiny while also protecting it from, well, scratches.

If the scratch stems deeper than the clear-coat, you will need to sand the scratch down and cover with replacement paint. If the scratch doesn’t look like it is any deeper than the clear-coat, then you may be able to use an abrasive compound or even toothpaste. That’s right, toothpaste.

Use Toothpaste To Repair A Scratch

In the auto body world, toothpaste is often compared to sandpaper. In the same way that sandpaper will make a surface smooth, toothpaste will make your teeth smooth. As it turns out, it will also work on your car. Simply spread some toothpaste onto a sponge or soft cloth and rub it into the scratch. If the cut is shallow enough, you should see the white disappear into the toothpaste. Wash off the paste and you’re done. If you are unsure about how deep your scratch is, it never can hurt to try to rub some paste on it. If you have any questions, leave a comment below.
