Although nothing is official yet, we have seen the GT R being tested in multiple different settings over the last year. We’ve seen enough evidence, in fact, that even if it isn’t in 2017, the GT S will return as the GT R. Will this new Mercedes-Benz be awesome enough to be worth holding out for? The GT S has only been around for one year. It replaced the 2015 Mercedes-AMG SLS GT, which many Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts were not too excited about because of some of the specifications. It features a 4.0-liter engine where the SLS GT had a 6.2L V8. It featured less power, but basically the same acceleration thanks to a new transmission and better balance.
It has been seen on city streets, at the Nurburgring, and even in the snow. It withholds the basic shape of the GT but it looks a little wider. It definitely has some extra wings on it which will likely be retractable, taking a page from the Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile concept car, but the best part is the engine. Mercedes-Benz fans rejoice as the 6.2L V8 will make its return to the GT. What will that mean? Well more power, again, for one. It won’t be as much power as the SLS GT because, let’s face it, it’s too much. The best way to look at it is that it will be the SLS GT and the GT S combined. All the best will stay, and everything else will be discarded.
The GT S will likely still be available for purchase after the GT R debuts. The GT S can be though of as a street car and the GT R will be reserved for track racers and death-seeking commuters.
