For the last few years, and longer for some, the world has been waiting for Mercedes-Benz to release a pickup truck. Mercedes-Benz is one of the most successful automotive brands in history and it has its hand in every class of passenger car except for the pickup truck. It has been said that this missing link has to do with the fact that it wouldn’t be able to keep up with the F-150 in terms of sales. This may have a lot of truth to it, but after looking at the spy shots available online, it is safe to say that the Mercedes-Benz GLT will be in the United States…eventually.
The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for the last thirty years or so. Can Mercedes-Benz compete with the Limited and Platinum models that are now available with every bell and whistle known to man? We think so. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz hasn’t released any official pictures of the truck yet, but from what we can tell, it is a new twist on the already existing Nissan Frontier, which has a more progressive look to it than the traditional F-150.
Ford has earned a lot of credit with its line of EcoBoost engines, but actually this technology is nothing new. In fact, Mercedes-Benz has been using turbochargers and direct injection fuel systems since way before the EcoBoost came out. The engine in the GLT will likely be one that is already found in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Because it will be released outside of the United States first, we expect it will be the 3.0L V6 turbocharged diesel that you might find in the GLE or the S550. We will stay on top of the Mercedes-Benz GLT United States release date, but for now, we probably won’t see it until 2020. What do you think?
