Mercedes Unveils Transforming Car At Frankfurt Auto Show

Mercedes-Benz IAA Concept 2015

If you are familiar with the name Transformers, then you know that cars that can change their shape are just about the coolest thing in the history of things. As it turns out, Mercedes-Benz is aware of this too, and that is why it created the Mercedes-Benz IAA concept for the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. IAA is an acronym for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile and that is exactly what it is. It slightly resembles the F-015 Luxury in Motion Concept Car with its silver bullet color and futuristic wheel design, but has a never-before-seen feature that will melt your brain.

The concept car is a window into the future of driving. It is technically a hybrid vehicle because it has a combustion engine, as well as an electric motor that can take the IAA up to 40 miles without needing its partner in crime, the gasoline engine. What’s more impressive is that this car is capable of reaching speeds past 150 miles per hour. It does this with 279 horsepower and an adjustable, aerodynamic body.

That’s right, we said adjustable. At speeds up to 50 miles per hour, the IAA can switch to an aerodynamic mode that changes the design of the car at the push of a button. When activated, the IAA extends at the back and the front to help the air flow more cleanly over the top of the car. A guard also slides underneath the car from the front bumper to avoid loss of airflow to the underbelly of the beast.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t disclosed exactly how efficient the Mercedes-Benz IAA Concept 2015 is, but we speculate that it must be able to compete with motorcycles and electric cars of the modern era. Mercedes-Benz has a long history of concept automobiles and has been breaking records in speed, efficiency, and design since the 1930s. It is highly unlikely that the IAA will ever go on sale, but it is certainly a preview of things to come.
