Mercedes-Benz developers have created the future of car lighting technology with a dazzle-free main beam headlamp in HD. The revolutionary headlamp technology, named “Digital Light”, shines with maximum performance, but that’s not all–the headlamps also pioneer a new level of driver-assistance by facilitating communication. The intelligent control logic required by the new headlamps was developed by the luxury brand itself, while the final product was developed by Mercedes-Benz in collaboration with two other companies. What makes the HD quality headlamps special are smart computers with chips that work with over one million micromirrors. Mercedes-Benz developed algorithms to receive detailed information from the vehicle’s sensors about current surroundings. From that gathered information, the vehicle’s sensors calculate in real time the brightness value for each one of the over two million pixels.
The result? Ideal, high-resolution light distribution that perfectly adapts to the surrounding conditions. The Digital Light technology provides optimum vision and maximum brightness no matter where it travels. This dynamic and precise technology even detects other vehicles on the road and adjusts the headlamps to prevent dazzling other drivers without compromising visibility.
Not only does the Digital Light technology achieve the ideal light distribution depending on the driving situation, the system was also designed to guide and support the driver in critical situations like driving down a winding mountain road or through roadblocks in a construction zone. The technology will also be able to project light traces of missing road markings, as well as messages like direction arrows or warnings, onto the road, which will improve awareness during night-time driving.
The goal of producing the Digital Light technology was to deliver important contributions towards traffic safety and to move closer to accident-free and autonomous driving. First debuted in 2015, the technology has now been implemented in demo models and will be on the road in the near future.

“With our ‘DIGITAL LIGHT’ strategy we are not striving for beam records, rather we want to achieve optimum vision and maximum brightness without glare. Innovative functions for supporting the driver and staging communication with other road users significantly optimize safety when driving at night,” emphasizes Gunter Fischer.
