Cars are so much smarter than they were even five years ago. We are seeing innovations that would not have been possible in the recent past now become commonplace, and Mercedes-Benz may be ready to kick it up a notch. Will a Mercedes-Benz ever be able to drive itself? The answer to that is likely to be yes, and perhaps sooner rather than later.

Can Mercedes-Benz cars drive with level 3 autonomy?

Recently, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority just granted system approval to the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the EQS. This enables properly equipped vehicles to drive at speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h) on suitable German highways with heavy or congested traffic.

This allows the driver to take their attention off of the road a little bit during these situations. Applications that are even normally blocked on the Mercedes-Benz central display will be enabled while DRIVE PILOT is engaged.

Will new Mercedes-Benz models be able to drive autonomously in the U.S.?

It remains to be seen whether Mercedes-Benz will transition this technology over to the U.S. It’s possible we see some of these innovations immediately, but regulations and liability rules and laws are different in every country. We do know that it will be enabled and available in Germany, but we will have to wait to learn more.
