Many people mistakenly believe that the AMG® in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle stands for “Affalterback Motor Group.” However popular this incorrect belief might be, there is actually a different meaning for these three iconic letters.
The AMG® in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle actually stands for two of the founders; Hans-Werner Aufrect, and Erhard Melcher. The “G” at the end is for Großaspach, which is their birthplace.
Altogether, the AMG® stands for “Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach.” Which makes a bit more sense than some of the other explanations car shoppers had come up with!
The AMG® trims are higher trims in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, and generally have more power, better performance, and more features than a trim that is not AMG®.

While the AMG® engine was much more common to see on racing and performance vehicles, that is no longer the case. Almost all of the modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles have an AMG® engine option, and therefore there is at least one AMG® trim on most Mercedes-Benz vehicles, if not more. While there are exceptions such as the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, those vehicles are few and far between. This ability to have an AMG® engine option in the everyday driving vehicles has only driven the Mercedes-Benz models into further popularity.
One of the more recognizable vehicles that you may already have heard about is the Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT, which is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a speedy and luxurious vehicle. Other popular Mercedes-Benz vehicles that have an AMG® trim include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sedan and the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV.
