2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R New Turbos Make More Boost!

What is the boost pressure of the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R

If there is one thing Mercedes-AMG is good at, it is making more power than the competition. Whether it be diesel, supercharged, turbocharged, or biturbocharged, Mercedes-Benz is always ahead of the game with horsepower and torque. With the release of the GT R, we decided to take a look at what makes a Mercedes-Benz a Mercedes-Benz. Is it the forced induction that does the trick or is it something else. Our first mission is to find out what the boost pressure is on the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R.

Two New Turbochargers

The GT R makes 577 horsepower. This is 74 more horsepower than the GT S that was released last year. Where does this extra power come from? At first we assumed Mercedes-AMG was just holding out on us, but then we learned that the GT R got brand new turbochargers with smaller wastegates, forcing the boost higher.

What is a wastegate?

A wastegate is a valve that lives in a turbocharger to the side of the turbine. When pressure builds too high, the wastegate opens to let air around the side of the turbine instead of going through. This makes the engine run smoother, but it is also a waste of pressure. By decreasing the size of the wastegates, more air is forced through the turbine. This is why you hear the recoil every time the engine revs. The pressure is so high that if forces the turbo in the other direction when gas stops being fed to the engine!

GT R Boost

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT S boosts 17.4 PSI through the exhaust. Thanks to the new turbos, the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R has a boost pressure of 19.6 PSI. Isn’t it amazing what a few pounds can do when you are dealing with such a large displacement? Of course, there are other new things that contribute to the GT Rs new performance, but this is the main reason for the power increase. If you have any questions about the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R boost pressure or the new turbos, leave a coment below!
