“Coupes have two doors and sedan have four doors.” For many people, this is the defining difference between a coupe and a sedan. However, this difference does not hold true. What is a coupe when talking about cars and how is it different from other vehicle types like a sedan or roadster? Let’s take a look.
What is a Coupe?
Coupe (or Coupé in the original French) did originally mean a two-seater horse-drawn carriage. As the automobile came into existence the term was adopted for two-seater cars. Nowadays, the word coupe generally means that a vehicle has a sportier powertrain compared to its sedan variant, as well as a few physical characteristics that sedans don’t, the most common of which is a sloped rear roof.
